Agribusiness Management and Strategy

I have a long-standing research interest and consultancy experience in agribusiness management ranging from profitability analysis to evaluation of feasibility of agricultural enterprises. My recent work in the optimization analysis of farms uses nonparametric approaches to test the optimization behavior of farms using panel data on farms.

Survey and Survey Data management

Some of my current work involves coordinating and managing survey data for monitoring and evaluation of food and nutrition security program. I have been leading and coordinating the collection of high quality survey data for tracking the progress and achievement of the global food and nutrition security initiative, known as Feed the Future, of the United States Government currently under implementation in northern Ghana. I have completed a baseline and a midterm population-based surveys (over 7,000 households and 40,000 individual members) and two rounds of agricultural production surveys that are actively being used for evidence-based decision making by USAID|Ghana mission, Bureau for Food Security at USAID in Washington, D.C. and local government development practitioners in Ghana and other stakeholders.

I played a central role in recruiting and retaining survey data collection companies. I have played a significant role in developing survey protocols, developing sample sizes, customizing survey questionnaires, training enumerators and field coordinators, monitoring the quality of data collection in real time (which was circulated to survey coordinators on the field for management actions), providing resources for trouble shooting in computer assisted data collection, and producing periodic monitoring reports.

I spent considerable time for analyses and synthesis of survey data and subsequent construction of program level impact indicators that resulted in the publication of a book and midterm survey reports. At K-State, I coordinated and supervised graduate students to sharpen their survey data cleaning skills, writing data analytics codes, advising theses, dissertations, and working papers and helping with the preparation of annual reports. I conducted numerous post survey data and results dissemination seminars, outreach activities and presentations in project sites in Accra, Ghana and the regional and district capitals and Universities. I represented K-State team in meetings with Bureau for Food Security at USAID, USAID| Ghana Mission and Government of Ghana counterparts.

Data Analysis and Training

I help coordinate and supervise graduate students to help in survey data handling and cleaning, writing data analytics codes, and help with developing research skills of graduate students. I also enjoy the privilege of graduate training in the form of committee membership and/or teaching.

As part of my funded projects, I am responsible in recruiting and retaining survey data collection companies.

I conduct trainings in the form of short course in the US and around the world. I also conduct outreach activities involving Kansas producers on profitability and farm management interests.

I love mentoring and guiding students in their studies and research endeavors.

I have actively guided graduate students to make use of the data that our program collected in their graduate school trainings. As a result, 13 of our graduate students have been able to utilize our PBS data in their class projects, presentations in regional, national and international meetings, and in their theses and dissertations. I took pleasure in helping students hone their data analysis and preparation of their research results. Students in our program have expressed their appreciation of my guidance and help in their theses.

I provided intensive trainings to over 120 enumerators during our Population Based Survey data collections covering diverse topics to help the enumerators become proficient communicators when surveying the respondents.

Over the years, I have been involved in a number of short-term training on data analysis and project management.

Monitoring , Evaluation and Impact Assessment

I have been involved in the monitoring and evaluation of numerous projects and programs.

In my current role, I lead and coordinate the collection of high quality data for tracking the progress and achievement of the global food and nutrition security initiative, known as Feed the Future, of the United States Government currently under implementation in northern Ghana. Ghana is one of the multiple focus countries around the world covered by the Feed the Future program. The Feed the Future program aims to achieve sustainable and broadly shared economic growth by reducing poverty and malnutrition, especially in children and women. The program developed high-level indicators of outcome such as the prevalence of poverty, prevalence of stunted children under 5 years, prevalence of underweight women of reproductive age, women’s empowerment in agriculture, household hunger scale. The program also developed intermediate indicators of output such as crop yield and gross margin. To help facilitate the tracking of progress towards achieving the goals and objectives of the program, we have been collecting high quality data in multiple fronts including large-scale population based surveys and agricultural production surveys.  I have been leading our team in developing multiple survey questionnaires, training enumerators and field coordinators, monitoring the quality of data collection in real time, providing resources for trouble shooting in computer assisted data collection, and producing periodic monitoring reports.

In the past, I led monitoring and evaluation teams including in non-governmental organizations.
